Self-Care: Stay Curious (#28SelfCareHacks)
One of the lessons that I have integrated into my life from Yoga is being in inquiry. To stay curious and have a beginner’s mind continuously opens one up to new learning, different experiences, and a lot less resistance. I hate to say that I now have limited patience for those who think they know it all. Yoga has taught me that there is the potential for limitless learning — about life, about myself, about the world — which by the way changes EVERY DAMN DAY. How can anyone think that there isn’t something else to learn about one thing or everything for that matter.
Be curious. Live in the inquiry. Continue to learn.
Lifelong learning helps to keeps your mind and passion alive. Humans are naturally curious. There is a statistic that says that 74% of Americans consider themselves lifelong learners. Embrace lifelong learning and your life will be enriched on so many levels. It is part of who we are, and it helps give life meaning. It is its own reward.
My favorite author, Elizabeth Gilbert says this about curiosity in her book Big Magic:
“Passion is a tower of flame, but curiosity is a tiny tap on the shoulder — a little whisper in the ear that says, "Hey, that's kind of interesting…" Passion is rare; curiosity is every day. Curiosity is therefore a lot easier to reach at times than full-on passion — and the stakes are lower, easier to manage.
The trick is to just follow your small moments of curiosity. It doesn't take a massive effort. Just turn your head an inch. Pause for an instant. Respond to what has caught your attention. Look into it a bit. Is there something there for you? A piece of information?
For me, a lifetime devoted to creativity is nothing but a scavenger hunt — where each successive clue is another tiny little hit of curiosity. Pick each one up, unfold it, see where it leads you next.
Keep doing that, and I promise you: The curiosity will eventually lead you to the passion.”
