Self-Care: Be A Morning Person (#28SelfCareHacks)

Are you someone who says “I’m not a morning person?” Well, you could be a morning person if you choose to be. I’m the first person to admit that I love to sleep in but I have learned that there are so many benefits of waking up early (yes, I mean with the sunrise) and starting my day at this time never fails to be a little bit magical.

I love meditating in the morning. I do my most creative work at the wee hours of the morning. As I write this it is 5:38am. I love the quiet time as I sip my coffee as my kids sleep upstairs, and the sun starts to come up. I always cherish this time before I start getting ready for me day. In these moments I become grounded, focused, and grateful. I set my intention for the day. My day inevitably goes more smoothly.

An article by Shivana Shirma says “To stay in sync with nature, Ayurveda recommends that it's best to wake up before sunrise, when there is natural movement in the atmosphere. To give you a surfing analogy, waking up before sunrise is like catching a wave. That wave will ensure that you ride through rest of the day effortlessly.”

Give yourself the gift of waking up early every day. If you are a person who wakes up at 9 am in the morning, don't force yourself to wake up at 5 am after reading this. But I do recommend gradually trying to develop a habit of waking up early. For example, go to sleep half an hour earlier than your usual routine, and try getting up a half hour earlier. Do this for a week, then adjust another 30 minutes for a week, then another. After a few weeks, you will be calling yourself a morning person.
